Five medical students arrested for ragging

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Five students of Gandhi Medical College in Hyderabad were arrested on Wednesday for ragging the freshers of the college.

They were later released on bail.

City Police Commissioner Pervaram Ramulu said his department had booked a case on Tuesday under section 4 of the Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Ragging Act against five second year MBBS students on the complaint of the vice-principal of the college

Those arrested were T Amith Kumar, M Lokesh Mahendrakar, Mohammed Saif Hameed, R Shravan Kumar and Venkata Shiva Mohan Naidu, all aged 21 years, for subjecting nine first-year students -- three girls and six boys -- to ragging.

The girl students were forced to undress on the Necklace Road, while the boys were made to indulge in oral sex.

Magistrate A Santosh Reddy, however, hauled up the college principal for not taking adequate measures to curb the ragging menace and said the management could also be prosecuted for inaction.

The Commissioner said similar incidents of ragging were reported from several colleges and universities in the city.

"Booking of a criminal case and arrest and remand of five students should be taken as a serious warning by senior students who should desist from indulging in such activities in future," he said.

Ramulu said that a watch was being kept on college campuses and severe action would be initiated against erring students resorting to ragging.

"It is the responsibility of the college managements to nib the problem in the bud," he added.

Following publication of lurid details of ragging incidents in local newspapers, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed senior police officials to put down firmly such acts of barbarism.

He also directed the police to use Indian Penal Code and other penal laws, if the provisions of Andhra Pradesh Prevention of Ragging Act 1997 were found inadequate.
