Rajendra Kumari Bajpai is dead

Veteran Congress leader and former lieutenant governor of Pondichery, Rajendra Kumari Bajpai died in Allahabad this morning after prolonged illness. She was 76 years old.

Dr Bajpai, a former Union minister, was suffering from kidney trouble.

A former Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee chief, Dr Bajpai had been the welfare minister in the ministry headed by Indira Gandhi.

Dr Bajpai had represented the Sitapur Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh from 1985 to 1990.

Her son Ashok Bajpai is president of the district Congress committee and her daughter-in-law Dr Ranjana Bajpai is the Uttar Pradesh Mahila Congress president.

The last rites will be performed on the banks of the Sangam this evening, according to family sources.

A large number of party workers including UPCC president Salman Khurshid and social workers reached her residence and paid tributes to the departed leader.
